“In a world obsessed with the negative news cycle, I think of my work as totemic. A place for people to recharge, focus and gain strength. Perhaps representative of new folklore and myth from a possible future. Today, I feel hope, joy and unity are the acts of rebellion that will give light in the darkness.

You could say I’m a reformed propagandist.

And my art is my atonement.”

Artist statement

Jennifer Steele Evans is a multidisciplinary artist working across drawing, painting, digital photography and poetic prose to create dreamy, enigmatic works that explore storytelling, belonging and our place in the universe.

Seeking peace and redemption in a chaotic world, she draws inspiration from the mysteries of the British landscape and the power of images and words to empower or disempower. Her work delves into the transformative cycles of birth, death and rebirth, capturing the fragile beauty of fleeting moments.

Her abstracted landscapes and luminous colours evoke ambiguous realms where nature and humanity merge, unbound by societal expectations. Dance and music act as catalysts in her process, unlocking images and colours from deep within, which are swiftly captured in paint or charcoal. Oil paintings on wood panels emerge through a ritualistic layering - each addition and erasure creating a sense of impermanence, hinting at the delicate balance between identity and conformity.

Having grown up between Welsh and Polish cultures in the ancient borderlands of Wales and England, Jennifer’s work reflects a search for common ground and resilience. She weaves universal themes of myth, history and personal experience, drawing parallels to the narratives we tell today.

Currently, she is exploring the concept of a collective subconscious memory and the agency we hold in breaking generational cycles - particularly through the lens of motherhood. Within this, she investigates the relationship between the body, water, landscape, and light.
