Jennifer Steele Evans working on charcoal drawings in her studio at Assembly House, Leeds, West Yorkshire, UK

Artist, writer, maker, mother, wanderer, wonderer…

“A series of transformative experiences led me back to creativity as a way of making sense of the world. Through motherhood, death, job loss, deception, anxiety - and being faced with the idea of one day losing my sight - my perception of ‘real world’ dissolved and reformed. Through drawing, painting, dance and writing I began to talk and listen to my inner self. The exiled child that trespassed into forbidden gardens looking for adventure and used art as a way of finding comfort, joy and peace in darkness. And it was like coming home. It was the silent nourishing constant within the chaos of change. I began to reconnect with the natural world that was part of me, and the ebb and flow of creativity became an intuitive and instinctive way of living.”

Jennifer Steele Evans believes embodied creativity and it’s connection with stories hidden in the landscape has the power to transform and heal. Embedding this within her work as contemporary fine artist and writer, she seeks to bring totems of light, hope and space for contemplation into the art that she shares.

Growing up in the ancient borderlands of Wales and England to Welsh and Polish parents, she has a deep connection to hinterlands and places where land, sea and sky connect.

Currently based in West Yorkshire, United Kingdom, she is a studio holder at Assembly House, Leeds, and has studied Contemporary Fine Art at the Essential School of Painting as well as taken courses with The Royal Drawing School.

In 2024 she was selected to be part of the “Ones to Watch” exhibition at Sunny Bank Mills, which showcases the best of emerging creative talent in Yorkshire. Before returning to art she studied Politics and Communications at The University of Liverpool and worked in brand, communication and fashion. She is also a personal trainer, clothes maker, mother to Seren…and a little bit obsessed with dreamy skies, going down rabbit holes and nature reclaiming the derelict.
